AVI is a multimedia file format for storing sound and moving pictures in RIFF format developed by Microsoft. An AVI file can use different codecs and formats so there is no set format for an AVI file. This is very different from e.g. standard VCD video which sets a standard for resolution, bitrates, and codecs used.Files in AVI format can only be played using software able to recognize and decode the AVI format.

SVCD stands for 'Super VideoCD'. A SVCD is very similiar to a VCD, it has the capacity to hold about 35-60 minutes on 74/80 min CDs of very good quality full-motion MPEG-2 video along with up to 2 stereo audio tracks and also 4 selectable subtitles. This technology is mainly used in Asia.

A SVCD can be played on many standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player. SVCD quality is between that of VCD and DVD, and the images possible with an SVCD are roughly two times better than that from a VCD. The resolution of SVCD is 480x480 for NSTC or 480x576 for PAL.

The difference between a DVD, a VCD, and an SVCD:
DVDs provide the best fidelity and widest compatibility. They are ideal for playback on home DVD players. To make a PhotoShow DVD for playback on your home DVD player, you must have a DVD burner and use a blank DVD+RW, DVD-R, or DVD+R media disc (depending on your DVD burner).

Note on the VCD format: VCDs do not support video clips or multiple songs, nor will they accurately reproduce certain transitions, effects, and animated clip art & text. These are limitations inherent to the VCD format and do not signify an error in the VCD burning process. Because of this, it's usually better to burn your PhotoShow to SVCD than to VCD.
